Protection for lorry and bus charging stations
New mobility concepts mean new challenges - the switch to electric drives will bring important changes, particularly for passenger transport and logistics. Lightning, surges and arcing faults threaten the functioning of the charging infrastructure, the availability of electric buses or electric lorries and the safety of people working there.
Charging equipment for electric lorry or electric bus depots includes transformer stations, converter units, battery storage systems and even DC-supplied charging stations. If just one part of the charging infrastructure is damaged by a surge, the entire charging park is out of operation. As a logistics company or fleet operator, you need a professional protection concept that secures your business accordingly. We will gladly advise you on this and create a holistic, EMC-orientated lightning protection zone concept for you based on VDE 0185-305-4, IEC 61851-23 and IEC/EN 62305.

Step by step to the protection concept
Whether it's depot charging back at base or opportunity charging right there at the bus stop: The creation of a comprehensive protection concept begins with a risk analysis, in which we determine the threat of damage from direct and indirect lightning strikes to your structure and the people and equipment located there. We then create a customised lightning protection concept for your facility.
External lightning protection
Air-termination rods are used to capture lightning at previously defined strike points and guide it to the earthing system. The use of our high-voltage-resistant insulated HVI Conductors is recommended to ensure that the separation distances between the down conductors and electrically conductive parts are maintained.
Earthing and equipotential bonding
A corrosion-resistant, closely intermeshed earthing system connects all system components with each other and distributes the lightning current in a controlled manner and over a large area in the ground. That is how you ensure the protection of people, and dangerous surges are reduced. Additional potential control by means of lightning-current-tested mesh mats in the area where people may be present prevents step and touch voltage, which is dangerous for people.
Internal lightning protection measures
From the transformer station to the charging station and the electric bus: the internal lightning equipotential bonding and surge protection protect all the parts of the system from lightning currents and surges. Based on the lightning protection zone concept, the correct lightning current and surge arresters are used, both for power and data lines.
