DEHN founded sales company in Sweden
The Scandinavian economy has been experiencing growth for many years. Despite the small population, the region is home to more and more high-quality companies. In order to serve these markets even better, DEHN, as one of the world's leading suppliers of surge protection, lightning protection, earthing and safety equipment, has founded its own sales company in Sweden to commence operations on 1 April 2023. The company is thus consistently maintaining its international orientation. In future, DEHN Sverige AB will focus in particular on the areas of railways, electric mobility, energy storage and high-quality building technology for data centres, hospitals and industry, as well as renewable energies. "We are delighted that Johan Bäckman – a proven expert in lightning and surge protection with many years of experience in our business – is taking on the role of Managing Director locally", enthuses Helmut Pusch, CSO of DEHN SE. For the energy mix of tomorrow – DEHN protects the production and transport of "green hydrogen"
Over the past few years few topics have been as intensively discussed as our energy supply. What components should our energy mix have in the future to support the further development and expansion of the various megatrends of our time? Particularly in the recent past, the topic of hydrogen has become increasingly prominent, but only a few players are currently venturing into the subject. A first coordinated initiative is the " Hydrogen Center Bavaria (H2.B) ", which links partners from industry, science and politics. DEHN has been part of the alliance since the beginning of 2023. For regardless of whether it is a matter of producing or transporting "green hydrogen", comprehensive protection against lightning strikes and surges is essential.Due to the increasing demand for energy worldwide, new approaches and technologies are constantly being researched that could close any gaps in the supply. The benefits of the technology are obvious. Hydrogen is very easy to store and transport. A standard gas pipeline, for example, can transport eight times as much energy as a 380 kV double overhead power line – and at only a fraction of the cost. "Green hydrogen" stands out in particular as a pollutant-free, mobile energy source that can be further processed into synthetic fuels, for example. "Green hydrogen" is produced through the electrolysis of water – only electricity from renewable energy sources is used in the process. This often represents an obstacle to the rapid spread of hydrogen as an energy source to this day. What needs to be taken into account during the production, transport (in tanks or via pipelines) to the final application (hydrogen filling station) and storage of hydrogen are the possible effects of lightning strikes and surges.The Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV) and the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (GefStoffV) transpose the European Directive 1999/92/EC into national law in Germany. Technical guidelines for operational safety (TRBS) and for hazardous substances (TRGS) flesh out the respective ordinances and provide operators with information on risk assessment. They recommend protection measures for the respective ignition source and this includes protection against the effects of a lightning strike and protection against surges."Working with hydrogen also means being aware of the high risk of the gas exploding," says Tobias Braun, Global Business Development Manager at DEHN. "With our comprehensive portfolio covering earthing, external lightning protection and surge protection, also for systems located in a hazardous area, we develop comprehensive protection concepts for system operators that minimise risks during the production, transport, storage and use of hydrogen. A comprehensive lightning and surge protection concept and the use of optimally matched products increase the availability and service life of the installations and systems".DEHN is able to draw on decades of experience and helps with the planning and realisation of the lightning protection zone concept, also taking into account hazardous areas. In this way, the risks of sparking due to a direct lightning strike or discharge of conducted and induced interference energies can be reduced to a safety-related and also economically justifiable level. 20 years of product experience rolled into one conductor – DEHN presents HVI light plus for lightning protection applications
Even under difficult conditions. planning engineers and installers of lightning protection systems must maintain separation distances in order to prevent lightning current flashover into a building. Not only metal and electrical roof superstructures, but also retrofitted PV and mobile radio systems are in a highly exposed position. They must be protected from lightning strikes whilst maintaining the separation distance. The modern continuation of Benjamin Franklin style lightning protection is HVI light plus from DEHN. The high-voltage-resistant, insulated down conductor discharges lightning current from the air-termination system safely to the earth-termination system. It is system-tested and offers numerous advantages for installation and planning.When installing bare, uninsulated air-termination conductors on the roof, the separation distance to electrical and metal systems installed under the roof surface must be maintained in accordance with the current lightning protection standard DIN EN 62305-3. Cable installations, pipe systems or metal parts are frequently installed under the roofing in direct proximity to the air-termination system / down conductor, thus posing a proximity issue. The solution is isolated air-termination systems with high-voltage-resistant, insulated down conductors.The new high-voltage-resistant insulated HVI light plus Conductor has been tested with regard to its lightning current carrying capability and impulse withstand voltage both as a single conductor and as a system in accordance with DIN IEC/TS 62561-8 and offers simplified design options. 20 years of experience in one conductor: Back in 2002, the high-voltage-resistant, insulated HVI Conductor was patented and soon launched by DEHN as a pioneering innovation in external lightning protection in 2003. The coaxially constructed cable consists of a single-wire inner conductor with a thick-walled high-voltage-resistant insulation and a semi-conductive outer sheath. This design allows the HVI light plus to maintain an equivalent separation distance in air of 60 cm to earthed metal building installations without creepage discharge. This prevents uncontrolled flashover and channels lightning current directly to the earthing system. The lightning current carrying capability of the HVI light plus is 150 kA and it can be used in lightning protection classes II, III and IV at kc = 1.Equipotential bonding is established without the need for an additional equipotential bonding connection. This results in easier planning and installation options and, subsequently, significant time savings. The grey colour of HVI light plus blends in well with buildings with fair-faced concrete. In addition, the sheathing can be painted and thus adapted to the colour of the respective architectural surroundings.The grey outer sheath protects against electric shock. In line with test standard IEC 60060-1, this ensures that in the event of lightning discharge no-one is subjected to dangerous voltages. For public buildings such as schools, nurseries, or museums, this is a requirement of DIN EN 62305-3 which is automatically met by the HVI light plus.The HVI light plus also has Ex approval and can be used in hazardous areas of Ex zones 1 (gases, vapours, mists) and 21 (dusts). The HVI light plus is halogen-free and has fire class Eca.All tools already in use for the existing HVI range can also be used for the HVI light plus. InnoTrans 2022: Protect railway infrastructure with DEHN
In order for rail technology to work reliably, many highly sensitive electrical and electronic systems must do so too. The continuous availability of these systems is at risk, however. Lightning strikes or electromagnetic interference fields damage or destroy conductors, control devices, modules or computer systems. Lightning currents and surges can thus quickly cause costly downtimes and disruptions. Train delays, a lot of extra hassle and extremely high costs are the consequence. Comprehensive lightning and surge protection is therefore an essential component in rendering installations and systems safer and more reliable, and thus more efficient. DEHNpatch – Surge protection for Ethernet infrastructure
Advancing digitalisation demands an ever faster supply of data. High transmission volumes and ever improving bandwidths are a prerequisite. Structured cabling is an important component of today's network topology for information and data technology. In this context, safety is a multifaceted topic, in which lightning current and surge arresters play an important role. The new DEHNpatch DPA CL8 EA 4PPOE arrester is designed for use in a switchgear cabinet or data distributor and can handle data rates of up to 10 GBit/s. With Power over Ethernet (up to 4PPoE with a power transmission of up to 100 W), class EA transmission standard (max. 500 MHz), status indication and the possibility of remote signalling, the DEHNpatch is equipped for modern applications. Available bandwidths can be maxxed out while undisrupted data transmission can be ensured.The DEHNpatch DPA CL8 EA 4PPOE is a combined arrester (TYPE 1) with a lightning current discharge capacity of 4 kA (10/350 μs). The combined lightning current and surge arrester can be used at all lightning protection zone transitions from LPZ 0A to LPZ 1 and higher. It thus ensures protection in compliance with the lightning protection zone concept as per DIN EN 62305. Additional equipotential bonding can be established via a housing contact (screw connection).Based on the latest standard for terminal equipment supply via Ethernet cabling, the new DEHNpatch already protects 4PPoE applications with a power transmission of up to 100 W. It meets power requirements at a high transmission bandwidth of up to 10 Gbit. It therefore satisfies the transmission standard Channel Class EA (500 MHz) as per ISO/IEC 11801. The fully shielded design of DEHNpatch allows for use in shielded and unshielded networks. Direct earthing is possible via the DIN rail. Due to a width of just 19 mm, up to 24 devices can be integrated next to each other in a row in a 19" data distributor. As a result, valuable space can be used optimally. DEHNpatch is ideally suited for installation in small-sized distribution boards, as can be found for example in mast applications in mobile communication and in process and safety technology. Whether it is structured cabling, IP camera systems or Ethernet applications in general, DEHNpatch is prepared for a broad range of use due to its performance. This simplifies planning and storage, facilitates quick and easy product selection and enables simple installation. DEHNpatch is the first arrester in its class to be equipped with an integrated optical status indicator. This clearly indicates the status of the arrester (red/green). Consequently, in the event of an overload, it can be identified on the system quickly and replaced easily. Furthermore, you have the option of monitoring the arrester with a stationary remote signalling unit (DEHNrecord DRC IRCM). The status of an arrester group is reported to a higher-level control system via a floating contact. In this way, DEHNpatch enables remote condition monitoring. Troubleshooting and on-site inspections can now be done away with. The new DEHNpatch thus also fits perfectly into monitoring systems for the arresters of measuring and control systems of the BLITZDUCTORconnect product range and draws on the monitoring mechanisms of the existing system. This means quick and simple remote signalling of the surge protection system is possible.The DEHNpatch surge arrester boasts the "GHMT-approved" seal of quality. The Gesellschaft für Hochfrequenzmesstechnik (Company for High-Frequency Measuring Technology, or GHMT for short) thus affirms, by means of an independent third-party test, that the arrester has met the normative requirements and standards for high-performance networks of data technology and therefore has the designated, diverse fields of application. United to help – Staff and company at DEHN SE make a joint donation for people in UkraineThe conflict in Ukraine has had us on edge for several weeks now. It has led to unprecedented demonstrations of solidarity and willingness to help throughout the world. DEHN SE wants to help. In its own fundraising campaign, more than 20,000 euros were collected by the workforce. By way of motivation, the company had made an initial contribution of €25,000 and also promised to double the amount of money raised by the employees at the end of the campaign. In total, a joint DEHN donation of 66,000 euros was put together. "We would like to thank all our employees for their great generosity. We are incredibly proud to be able to send out such a strong signal from the DEHN family. Yet again, we are collectively showing what being a family is all about - solidarity, humanity and mutual support," says Dr Philipp Dehn, CEO of DEHN SE. The entire sum will now go to the organisation Aktion Deutschland Hilft where it will be used to satisfy the most important basic needs of the people in Ukraine, for example, to provide food, water and adequate health care. Cooperation of technological leaders: DEHN and Max Bögl collaborate on a wind tower project
How to prevent damage to a wind turbine as best as possible if lightning strikes the exposed tower? This was the question posed to simulation experts from DEHN along with the Max Bögl Group in a project. Now both companies are benefitting from the results.The Max Bögl Group cooperated for more than three years with the lightning protection specialists DEHN to optimise the lightning protection concept for the second generation of Max Bögl's wind tower system. The two partners recently successfully completed the project, which yielded new scientific findings.The Max Bögl Group not only works in its core competence of construction, but also develops highly successful, integrated regenerative energy concepts, which the company plans and implements both at its own operating locations and for other industrial companies. "When we began developing our Wind Tower mb 2.0 a few years ago, we did not only want to improve the production, assembly and transport, but also the lightning protection concept", explains Josef Bayer, who initiated and guided the project as Head of Research & Development Energy Systems at Max Bögl. With the previously known methods, lightning protection for the new wind tower could only be calculated inadequately. The company found the right partner for this challenging task in the lightning protection experts DEHN.As well as developing and producing products for lightning and surge protection and safety equipment, DEHN also operates a modern test centre. Customers can have the lightning and surge protection of their products, installations and systems checked here. Clients from the wind energy sector regularly make use of DEHN's services. However, for the staff in the DEHN Test Centre, the job of simulating lightning and surge protection on a tower more than 100 metres in height and testing this in a laboratory was anything but a routine task. "Using complex calculations, we have modelled the path the lightning flows when it strikes the wind tower," explains Dr Martin Hannig, Computer Simulation Specialist at DEHN. "In laboratory tests, we then verified this situation and analysed the effects of the calculated surges and lightning currents in more detail," says Bernd Moosburger, Test Engineer at DEHN. A special lightning current generator was also used for this purpose, which is one of the most powerful models of its kind in the world. The system enables very high lightning currents to be generated. The result of the trials? The developed lightning protection concept passed the tests, which Max Bögl can now demonstrate to its customers with a test certificate. For DEHN, the assignment, which initially began as a service task, developed into an insightful research project. In the wind tower of a wind power facility in Deining in the district of Neumarkt, the engineers at DEHN have installed the new DEHNdetect measuring system. It measures lightning current distribution under real-life conditions. The DEHNdetect lightning current measuring system detects long-stroke and impulse currents. The simulations can therefore be verified. With the help of DEHNdetect, computer simulations can be compared with the effect of real lightning.

Statement of the Executive Board of DEHN SE on the Events in the Ukraine
We have been following recent events in Ukraine with great concern. What is happening there leaves us speechless. It was inconceivable for many of us that, in this day and age, acts of war could hold us in suspense - least of all directly on the external border of the European Union. Our thoughts are with the people in Ukraine and all our colleagues who are directly or indirectly affected by the conflict.DEHN SE is built on a foundation of values developed through the decades. As a family-owned company we care about the well-being of people around the globe. We also condemn all forms of armed conflict. On this basis, we the executive board of DEHN SE, have decided to largely suspend business activities in Russia.Our executive board and the appropriate departments are currently assessing the extent to which the present situation will have an impact on the business activities of DEHNgroup.
