PINTSCH BAMAG level crossing safety

PINTSCH BAMAG Antriebs- und Verkehrstechnik GmbH is one of the leading manufacturers of safety products for railways and waterways. High safety standards are therefore a matter of course – also for the safety of railway crossings.

To ensure the reliable availability of level crossing safety systems even during thunderstorms, PINTSCH BAMAG relies on DEHN components to protect its railway signalling technology.

The challenge

Nowadays, modern level crossing safety systems are fully electronic. This makes the computer-based systems more susceptible to damage from surges.

The control distances of the peripherals on the track, such as inrush loops and monitoring signals, can be up to 2.5 km in both directions from the concrete switching station. Damage can be caused both by direct lightning strikes and by surges caused by remote lightning strikes.

The solution

PINTSCH BAMAG developed a comprehensive lightning protection concept in close cooperation with DEHN and DB Netz AG, which was approved by the Eisenbahn Bundesamt (German Federal Railway Authority) in May 2008.

It effectively protects level crossing safety systems against damage caused by surges due to lightning strikes or switching operations.

Lightning and surge protection components increase system availability. In fact, insurance companies are increasingly demanding additional measures from operators following the occurrence of surge damage. The lightning protection concept used here is currently possible with the RBÜT and BÜP types of level crossing technology.
