The lightning current is distributed into the ground over a large area in a controlled fashion through the intermeshed, low-impedance interconnected earthing system in order to ensure the safety of people and to reduce dangerous surges. Step and touch voltages that are dangerous to people are prevented through additional potential control in areas where people are located.
