Lightning - fascinating but dangerous

The powerful natural phenomenon of lightning and thunder has fascinated people since the beginning of mankind.

For a long time, the enormous force of a thunderstorm was believed to be a supernatural power and humans felt themselves at its mercy.

Since the Age of Enlightenment and the advancement of technology, this heavenly spectacle has been scientifically investigated. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin’s experiments proved that the phenomenon of lightning is an electrical charge.

Thunderstorm hazards

Meteorological estimations say that about 9 billion lightning flashes occur each day around the world, most of them in the tropics.

Nevertheless, the incidents of damage reported as a result of direct or indirect lightning effects is on the rise.

Lightning protection systems

The task of a lightning protection system is to protect buildings against fire or mechanical damage and to prevent people in the buildings from being injured or even killed.

A complete lightning protection system consists of external lightning protection (lightning protection/grounding) and internal lightning protection (surge protection).

Lightning protection zone concept

The LPZ concept according to IEC 62305-4:2010 facilitates the planning, implementation and monitoring of comprehensive protective measures.

Earthing

Whether in the case of existing or new buildings, a well-functioning earthing system is a prerequisite for protecting people against dangerous high voltages and for the safe operation of the electrical systems in buildings.
