Safety for hydrogen systems

Hydrogen is a key component in the energy revolution and can make a significant contribution to climate protection – as a fuel for cars, a raw material for industry, or a fuel for heating systems. As a versatile energy source, it can be used in nearly all sectors and is a highly relevant factor on the pathway to supplying energy from renewable sources. This chemical element is more flammable than other gases, however, meaning there is a high risk of explosion when handling it. This is why system operators are obliged to develop and implement a comprehensive protection concept.

Lightning and overvoltage protection for applications involving hydrogen

When it comes to surges and lightning strikes, special attention and consideration must be given to Ex zones and Ex system parts. Potentially explosive areas must be protected to minimise the dangers and consequences associated with overvoltages. The same applies to system components that can be struck directly by lightning or where partial lightning currents and surges are to be expected. Examples of this are vent stacks, exhaust outlets, aboveground tanks and pipelines.

Our protection concepts include external lightning protection, surge protection and solutions for earthing and equipotential bonding – all to safeguard the availability of the systems and to protect people in the vicinity.
