External lightning protection for industrial buildings

Whether industrial or office buildings: external lightning protection is regulated in IEC 62305 and protects buildings against the consequences of a direct lightning strike. A complete lightning protection system consists of the elements: Air-termination and down-conductor systems, earthing system, lightning equipotential bonding and separation distances.

The lightning current is fed into the down conductors by means of an air-termination system and channelled into the ground in a controlled manner.

Lightning equipotential bonding reduces the potential differences caused by lightning currents. This is achieved by connecting all isolated conductive parts of the installation directly by means of conductors or surge protective devices (SPDs).

Essential criterion: maintaining separation distances

The distance from the air-termination system and down conductor to metal and electrical installations of the system to be protected must be large enough to avoid dangerous flashovers and thus the risk of sparking and potential fires.

With conventional external lightning protection systems, it is often difficult to maintain the prescribed separation distances. Challenges are space and architectural requirements. The solution is an HVI Lightning Protection system. Depending on the HVI variant, the special design of the HVI Conductor enables compliance with equivalent separation distances of 45 to 90 cm (air) to earthed metal building installations. All installation variants are tested in accordance with IEC/TS 62561-8.
